Roxycakes – Behind the Scenes bio picture

The Roxycakes Blog

Welcome!

I created the Roxycakes Blog as an extension of Roxycakes.ca to show you things I couldn't fit on the main site, yet couldn't bear to keep from you! This section is updated on a weekly basis - so you can keep up with all of the new and exciting developments at Roxycakes. And if you see your cake on this site, let your voice be heard by posting your comments right here and now! Thanks for visiting and hope to see you soon!

Sweet regards,

Blue Peonies, Please

Danielle’s mother contacted me last year asking if I could create the flowers for her daughter’s croquembouche, which would be made and assembled by the charming french bakery Patisserie La Cigogne. I loved the idea and signed on for the collaboration.  I was a wee bit skeptical about making “ice blue” flowers. But when I […]

Garden Collection

Confession: I can’t keep fresh flowers alive for more than a couple days. I can however make sugar flowers that last a lifetime. So I have a brown thumb in the garden and a green one in the kitchen. It’s working out fine. So this collection was inspired in part by my dream to become […]

Family Inspiration

There are people you meet whose work inspires you to take your own creative leaps. My sister is definitely one of those people. She’s a photographer and the talent behind the lens of many of the photos on Roxycakes.ca. Josée inspires me to capture in cakes the level of emotion she’s able to capture in her […]

Great News, Great Timing

This has been a tremendous year for Roxycakes; but the last few weeks have been very difficult on a personal level, as my father was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness. Last week, while on a trip to visit him, I was notified that Roxycakes won a Wedluxe Best of 2010 Award. The goal of this blog […]

Rebecca Lane | Violin Performer & Teacher

Rebecca Lane is an important part of my life and business: she’s my violin teacher and one of my greatest sources for creative inspiration. I knew she performed at weddings in the GTA, but it never occured to me that we might actually work with the same clients – that is, until I was browsing the stunning […]

Jill & Michael | Thompson Landry Gallery

About a year ago, a man named Michael approached me about a surprise birthday cake for his beloved girlfriend, Jill. The amount of thought and planning that Michael put into this special surprise gave me a glimpse of the genuine love and affection between these two. Needless to say, I was thrilled to year, just a year later, […]

Sculpted Cakes!?

Really: sculpted cakes! A sculpted cake that looks like traditional cakes. Every single element of this cake is sculpted: the nuts, the graham cracker crumbs, the coconut, the cherry, the strawberries, the slices — all sculpted to look like the real deal. It’s my ode to traditional cake – a reminder of how much cakes have progressed […]

Melissa & Rob, Enchanted

I confess, I tend to fall in love with my clients, and Melissa is no exception. Double-confession: that goes for her mum, too. Melissa and Rob left absolutely no detail unattended to achieve this breathtakingly romantic picture. I simply dare you to read through their photo story without getting misty! Oh, and see if you […]

Elisabeth & Maurice’s Story

Sometimes, just a few months before your wedding, you’ll stumble across the perfect detail for your day: the one that’s undeniably you, that perfectly captures your love for eachother, your passion for life.  Elisabeth and Maurice had what I call a cake-aha moment one evening while contemplating their book collection. They decided their wedding cake […]

No Cupcake Left Behind

Linar came to me with a vision: a cupcake “gift” for each of her guests! Some of the biggest fears I hear from clients is that their creation will go unnoticed or uneaten. The two things I recommend doing to avoid these tragedies are perfectly represented here: 1)  display the creation in a prominent place, and 2) leave […]

A Special-tea Cake

I just love when clients know exactly what they want. It makes it so much more fun to realize their vision and, hopefully, exceed their expectations!  Melissa wanted a cake that looked just like the centerpieces at her elegant wedding shower: peach roses in a cream ‘porcelain’ teapot! Love it…

Daniela’s Cake

When Daniela came to me for her wedding shower cake, she wanted something pink, elegant and out of the ordinary. We came up with a three-tiered cake shaped like a decadent cupcake topped with an oversized sugar peony. The cake measured 18″ tall and was the perfect centerpiece for her special event!

Birth Announcement

Tara from Bliss called about a very small cake for her client’s Alice in Wonderland-themed baby shower and gave me creative discretion (awesome). I love making small cakes that make a big impact, so I sculpted White Rabbit popping out of a sugar tea cup, announcing the impending arrival of the baby! Jodi was thrilled and plans […]

Suzie’s Cake

People always ask me, “What’s your favourite type of cake to make?” They usually expect to hear sculpted cakes, but it’s the really pretty romantic cakes that get me excited, like Suzie’s cake.  Inpsired by the gorgeous pattern on her bridesmaids’ gowns and the breathtaking creations of Fiori Floral & Event Design. If I were to marry […]

Rita’s Cake…

How many times can I make this cake? MANY! But for Rita’s event, we pulled out all the stops… created a complete sugar spread with olives, crackers, nuts, cheese wedges, a bottle of wine and a bottle of olive oil. Phew! It was a sugar FEAST!

Vera Wang Toronto

I’m completely inspired this week. First, I had the opportunity to view the Vera Wang Fall 2010 Bridal Collection up-close at a cocktail party last Thursday night. Absolutely breathtaking!
