A little gem…

Olivia wanted a small cake with a peony and gold accents for an intimate gathering with her bridesmaids.
I thought I’d share this little gem with you to show that even small cakes can make a big impact!

A 50-Year Love Story

Over the holidays, I was contacted by the daughter of a couple
celebrating their 50th anniversary. I initially refused the order as it
happened to be for the 26th of December, and Roxycakes was closed for
the holidays. She responded by telling me the story of her parents’
lives, which I found so incredibly inspiring and touching that I
immediately signed on to create a beautiful cake for these special
people. It turned out to be one of the greatest experiences I had over
the holidays. Here’s the creation, and you can read their story here.

The golden trees on this cake represent the couple’s passion for family;
the pearls, the hundreds of people they’ve reached out to over the years.
Two beautiful dragonflies represent the couple’s journey over the years,
and the cake sits atop a romantic floating organza base.

Meaghan’s Minis

Nestled in the historic Distillery District are some of the city’s most romantic wedding venues.  Meaghan chose Balzac’s Coffee House for her intimate wedding, as well as individually frosted and decorated wedding cakes for each of her guests. I love Balzac’s, and I love minis and special touches – so this one tops my list!

Fall-ing in Love …

When everyone starts mourning the end of summer, I’m looking forward to the fall season. I can’t help it – Fall is my favorite season! I love the warm clothes, the colors, and of course, the wedding cakes! Amanda’s fall wedding theme included a mix of burnt orange orchids, cinnamon, ivory and gold accents. Based on this, we came up with a final idea, which  finally came to life this weekend.

Amanda - Roxy, what a fantastic job you did on our wedding cake! It was simply breathtaking. You were able to capture the essence of Miguel and I through this beautiful creation. You are a true artist! Thank you! Amanda & Miguel

Lyndsay’s Bouquets

Many brides are looking for something completely different for their wedding cake. In this case, Lyndsay wanted to skip traditional wedding cake in lieu of cupcakes – but she took it a step further by asking me to arrange the cupcakes into gorgeous “bouquets”, complete with vases and ribbon. The result was outstanding! Each bouquet held 40 miniature cupcakes – for a total of 160 little treats, and each vase was topped with dozens of hand-sculpted sugar roses and leaves.

Sixty female chefs – One worthy cause

Great food, great wine, great music – for a great cause? Sign me up! This evening, Roxycakes participated in the 14th edition of Eat to the Beat. The event is a dazzling evening of sampling the gourmet creations of some of the city’s most talented chefs. Eat to the Beat has raised more than $2.7 million to provide immediate support to anyone affected by breast cancer. Tonight, Roxycakes served over 450 gourmet cake samples and received heart warming feedback. Also met dozens upon dozens of incredibly talented female chefs. Needless to say, I’m definitely coming back next year! To learn more about Eat to the Beat, please visit Eattothebeat.ca.

Stephanie’s Cupcakes

Stephanie came to me a year ago with a vision, and that vision came to life this past weekend. The flower dome top-tier cake, inspired by a similar cake in the Roxycakes gallery at roxycakes.ca, was the perfect addition to this cupcake tower. I scattered fresh rose petals, ordered from the florist, in between cupcakes to fill in gaps and add a little je-ne-sais-quoi to the tower. Love, love, love it.

Jennifer’s Cupcakes

As a cake and cupcake designer, I’m handed many color themes and I have to say – some aren’t easy! So when Jennifer revealed her color palette (ivory, pink, green, white), I breathed a sigh of relief! How can you go wrong with these colors? I make a lot of wedding cupcakes, but I still catch myself stopping as I’m packaging them up to admire their simple, delicate beauty!

Rosie Picks: Roxycakes!

What a surprise! I always browse the Weddingbells magazine website to keep up with trends. The last time I checked, I was curious when I saw a thumbnail of my cake on main page! I clicked and found I’d been picked as one of Rosie’s top three wedding cake designers in the country. Thanks, Rosie!

Arna’s Cake

Some cakes make me squeal of joy. This was one of them. Arna commissioned this cake for her 60th birthday celebration. Based on our consultations, I knew she loved the topsy-turvy look, but that she also loved her favorite baby blue coffee mug – which I carefully replicated in sugar for this creation. It felt only natural to incorporate sugar flowers, butterflies and three-dimensional swirls on this piece. The finished product made me smile from ear to ear, and the family’s reaction to this whimsical creation made it one I’ll never forget!

Jersey Boys

On August 20th, Jersey Boys Toronto celebrated it’s one year anniversary at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. In honour of the anniversary, Dancap Productions commissioned a large, 40 cm x 60 cm rectangular cake featuring the Jersey Boys logo – and I was thrilled to oblige! I was equally thrilled to receive stellar tickets for the anniversary performance, which was out of this world! It was my first time seeing Jersey Boys, but certainly won’t be my last!

Natalie & David

Natalie & David’s cake has to be one of my favorites this year. I love making roses and peonies – and this cake had tons of both! I also love making sugar look like delicately draped fabric, so that made me nuts as well. The flower dome and royal icing details were simply the icing on the cake!
